Patrick Henry College
Purcellville, VA – Patrick Henry College invites the Purcellville, VA community to attend a special ceremony to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001 on Friday the 11th, 2009, at 9:00pm on the PHC campus. The event will include keynote speeches from Jon Norsworthy, who has worked many different roles within the National Security community, and from a retired Special Forces Officer. Purcellville’s own mayor, Robert Lazaro, will deliver brief words of remembrance, as will PHC President Dr. Graham Walker.
To depict the horror of 9-11, on Thursday evening PHC students will lay out 2,977 American flags in the main circle of the College—one for each person killed in the terrorist attacks. This backdrop, says Rebecca Beach, PHC junior and event organizer, will bring home the impact of lives lost.
“We want to remind America to Never Forget!” she exclaims.
Beach has arranged memorial services for six out of the last seven years, in her hometown or at PHC. In spring of 2008, a significant portion of her hometown, Hackettstown, NJ, turned out for a local rally she put together to honor America’s troops.
In general, she says that her passion to remember 9-11 has only grown as she has watched the nation’s initial reaction fade.
“I’ve made it my mission that we will never forget 9-11 and the people who died for our country!” she says. “Both those who died on that day, and our current servicemen and women.”
The keynote speaker, Jon Norsworthy, has served as an infantry paratrooper, and also as a federal air marshal in the aftermath of 9-11-2001, besides his National Security positions. He is currently the Director of Special Projects for SPADAC, Inc., a provider of geospatial intelligence services and predictive analysis.
The other speaker is a retired Special Forces Officer who was present at the U.S.S. Cole bombing on 10-12-2000, at the American Embassy bombings in 1998, and at the Pentagon on 9-11-2001. Since this officer was recently called overseas, Norsworthy will show the audience a video interview he recorded with him.
