Non-degree students may be college-age, adults, or advanced high school students – anyone who wants to take classes but who hasn’t committed to pursuing a PHC degree. Non-degree admission is a very flexible enrollment option, allowing students to choose whichever courses meet their needs or interests (provided they meet any prerequisites).
Non-degree admission allows exceptional high school students to begin earning credit toward a Bachelor's degree. Bright high school students should be capable of doing well in these courses if they commit themselves to the work. Note, however, that our introductory courses are offered at a college sophomore level. The application requests standardized test scores and a writing sample to help the Admissions Committee evaluate student readiness. These students should start with lighter course loads.
All core credits earned as a non-degree student will apply toward a degree program if a student is later admitted as a degree-seeking student. Non-degree students may take a maximum of 19 total credit hours before they must apply for degree-seeking admission in order to continue in the DL program.
The non-degree application is designed to make it easy to get started with PHC distance learning right away. It is a tool whereby the college seeks students with the same high academic accomplishments and commitment to PHC's unique Christian mission, but it does not include the lengthy review that degree-seeking applicants undergo.
Students accepted through this application earn the same credit and build a transcript just as degree-seekers do, but they cannot go beyond 19 credits of distance learning without completing the full application.
Student testimonial:
“When I enrolled in DL courses, my desire was to pursue higher education with Patrick Henry College while remaining at home. Because of DL, I was able to take a few classes and work part-time while remaining with my family. Learning through online courses does take a fair amount of discipline, diligence and organization, but the study and time-management skills I developed have proved invaluable.” – Aubrey, California
