Maintaining Our Financial Independence
The costs of building and operating a college far exceed tuition revenue, which is why institutions rely so heavily on financial support from alumni, endowments, and taxpayers. Since Patrick Henry College just opened in 2000, alumni giving and endowments are not sources of income at this time. We don’t accept funding from government, or any other source that includes terms which supersede the authority of our Board of Trustees or conflict with our foundational statements . PHC also operates without debt, adding new facilities and programs only as funds are available. Instead, we rely heavily on the generous giving of families across the country to meet our financial obligations.

Challenge Gift Guarantees Completion of Barbara Hodel Center (click here for full story)
Patrick Henry College has received a guarantee from a friend of the College for the completion of the new Barbara Hodel Center. The pledge ensures funding for the 106,000 square-foot, approximately $32 million student life center. The building is scheduled to be completed by the start of the fall 2009 semester.
The guarantee comes in the form of a “challenge grant” meant to enlarge the College’s base of existing donors while solidifying the long-term fiscal health of PHC and its annual scholarship program. For the next 12 months, the College will embark on the Finish the Foundation campaign, focusing energy and resources toward growing the existing base of financial donors from 1,500 to 5,000.
How will you use my gift?
Our biggest need is for our scholarship fund. Approximately 90% of our students receive either need grants or merit scholarships. These grants and scholarships are funded completely by annual private gifts to the college. Many students would not be able to attend without the assistance provided by your gifts. Your gift will also enable the College
- attract and retain top teaching faculty and administrators
- expand our selection of materials in the library
- continue our excellence in debate, moot court and forensics
- Provide support for every facet of the student experience
