PHC provides access to Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services to the PHC community through its membership in OCLC. OCLC is the world’s largest bibliographic network containing about 2 billion holdings in more than 72,000 member libraries worldwide. Requests for items owned by the PHC Library will not be filled unless the item is checked out by another patron, missing, or considered lost. Patrons may use the library catalog to place a hold on a PHC item that is currently checked out. ILL services allow the PHC Library to support your academic needs with quality information that is not readily available from the library collection. However, abuse of the ILL service may result in a fine or suspension of borrowing privileges.
Members of the PHC community may request ILL's of books and A/V materials directly in the PHC Library catalog. Simply refine your search to include all network libraries. Under "Search these Libraries", select "Libraries Worldwide".
As soon as your ILL request has been processed by the system, you will see it appear in your account in the library catalog as a "hold". When the item arrives in the library, staff will check it out to you. The item will now appear in your list of "checkouts". Renewals should be placed here, in your account in the library catalog.
You will be notified by email when an ILL item is ready for pickup. Notifications are usually sent at 7:00 am each day.
To request a copy of an article from a journal, newspaper or magazine, please use the form below:
Interlibrary Loan Periodical Request Form - articles from periodicals such as journals, magazines and newspapers
HSLDA employees may not place direct requests in the library catalog but must use this form:
Interlibrary Loan Book Request Form - books, A/V materials, microform, etc.
Processing Fees and Borrowing Charges: PHC subsidizes the cost of ILL transactions for its students, faculty, staff, and alumni for the first $10.00 of the applicable fee. If borrowing charges exceed $10.00, the library patron will be notified before the item is borrowed. The patron will be asked to pay the amount above $10.00 or cancel the transaction before the transaction is completed. Patrons may accelerate this process by indicating on the ILL request form how much they are willing to pay for the requested item.
Distance Learning Students: Interlibrary Loan services are not available to Distance Learning Students through the PHC Library. Please check with your local public library regarding their ILL services to patrons.
Community users: Community users will be assessed a $5.00 processing fee for each ILL request and all borrowing charges from the lending library.
Overdue Fines: The PHC Library will charge $0.50/day for overdue ILL materials. There is a 7 day grace period for overdue ILL items.
Other Fees: Users will be expected to pay any charges from the lending library for lost, damaged or overdue items. Users that abuse ILL borrowing privileges may be charged a fee for their requests.
Please allow at least 2 weeks turn-around time for ILL transactions. Timely access to requested materials is not guaranteed. Despite our best efforts to provide you with prompt service, the PHC Library cannot control the activity or efficiency of the lending library.
The renewal of borrowed ILL materials is subject to the policies of the lending library. We recommend placing a renewal request at least 3 days prior to the original due date. To request a renewal of an ILL item, log into your account in the library catalog.
Borrowers will be notified by email when the requested item arrives at the PHC Library, usually at 7:00am. You will also be notified when an interlibrary loan item has been renewed by the lending library. The library staff will notify you should problems arise with your request.
