Incoming freshmen from across the nation will very soon cozy up their new home-away-from-home on campus! There may not be space for your HUGE stuffed giraffe, so how about other tips for making a dorm room more comfortable?
1. Removable Wallpaper
This is a fun way to make the walls less bare. It takes some effort to cut out the wallpaper and tack it up, but the result gives the room more character and impresses your friends. Brick wallpaper looks especially warm and inviting! Search Pinterest for more unique decor ideas.
2. Blankets
Make sure you have a cozy place to curl up at the end of the day or for a power nap. Also, you never know when you will want to wrap yourself in a blanket (and not-so-huge stuffed animals) while sitting at your desk in the mornings or after surviving a chilly walk from chapel or class.
3. Tension rod/curtain
In the suite-style dorms, hanging a curtain between the sink area and the bedroom is helpful. It provides another place to change, and it keeps the brightness out of the room if you need the light while your roommates are sleeping. If you plan to live in Shiloh, a curtain could function as your closet door.
4. Clip-on fan
Bring a clip-on if you usually use an overhead fan. It's great for keeping you cool as well as adding some white noise if you can't fall asleep in pure silence. And don't forget: you may need to bring an extension cord to plug it in!
5. Bedside caddy or shelf
You'll want somewhere to place items like your phone or tissues next to your bed. If you sleep on the bottom bunk, you'll have space for a little stand, but if you sleep on the top bunk, it helps to have a screw-on shelf or a hanging caddy organizer.
6. Closet space-savers
If you plan to live in any dorm except Shiloh (which doesn't have closet doors), use a hanging shoe rack to keep your closet less cluttered. For hanging clothes, use stacking hangers to save space. They allow you to hang multiple shirts, pants, or skirts vertically.
7. Clothes drying rack
Considering the business casual dress code, you won't want to throw all your clothes in the dryer. It helps to have a foldable drying rack that you can bring out on laundry day instead of finding random places to drape wet clothes.
8. Mugs and tea or coffee
Nothing says home like a hot drink, whether you need a drink to wake up, calm down, or kick that sickness. Having hot drinks on hand is also a great way to practice hospitality! And you can always use your mugs as flower vases.
