"I can give God the glory and say that were it not for Him, I would not be here today," Texas Congressman, Rep. Nathan Moran, said to a room full of Patrick Henry College (PHC) students. Rep. Moran enjoyed a recent visit to PHC, shared his testimony in chapel, and met with 6 students in the American Politics and Policy track at PHC.
Rep. Moran's message that morning addressed the Christian's vocation and shared his testimony. Rep. Moran encouraged students to find, follow, and fulfill their calling: "When you have a calling, God will give you an opportunity. Prepare ahead of time to step into that opportunity." He kept the message entirely focused on God.
He reminded the students not to compare themselves to others because "every calling is a great calling." The call on our life has equal and eternal value to every other call.
A faithful Christian, Rep. Moran reminded the students how the identity, purpose, belonging, and unconditional love they are seeking is found in Jesus Christ. He shared how he obeyed the Lord even when it meant seemingly sacrificing his political ambitions to care for his son, who has a disability.
But by God's grace, that sacrifice was temporary. Eventually, Rep. Moran made it into Congress. Faith and family will never conflict with your true calling, Rep. Moran said. But when it seems like they are in conflict, put faith and family first. "When you don't know what to do, love God and love others."
PHC student Rebecca Rose considered his advice immensely valuable. "The congressman helped me consider ways in my own life that I should be prioritizing and fulfilling the callings that God has given me," said Rose.
Moran's message encouraged another student, Abbagail Sullivan, in her faith. "God has worked powerfully in his life," she said. "Being able to hear his testimony of God’s faithfulness was impactful."
After chapel, PHC hosted a lunch for Rep. Moran in President Haye's office. Also invited were six American Politics & Policy students: Gabe Tanner, Nik Frey, Emma Fenton, Ben Arroyave, and the aforementioned Abbagail Sullivan and Rebecca Rose. As they sat around a table in President Haye's office, the students shared lighthearted moments with the congressman. They also got a unique opportunity to hear an elected official's thoughts on politics and his faith.
He left the students feeling encouraged, hopeful, and inspired. Nik said the conversation "restored his hope." Emma found it "exciting" to hear of a congressman "working for the Lord's purposes."
Abbagail: "Having Rep. Moran at our college was an honor. He is passionate about serving the Lord in the capacity he is in, and he shared that with the students. In a time where elected officials turn from their faith or use Christian jargon to gain votes, he is determined to stay on the straight and narrow regarding his faith, family, and vocation. I am grateful for the opportunity to listen to him and I am emboldened in fighting for our nation through civic engagement.”
Gabe: “Speaking to Rep. Moran was a breath of fresh air. He was down to earth, rooted in conservative convictions, and most importantly, passionate about serving Christ. It was a pleasure to hear his perspective, and I can only pray that God sends more people like him to Washington.”
Ben: "It was a privilege to speak with Rep. Moran. I was inspired by his commitment to be a light for Christ in a political world that is often flooded with darkness. He discussed the steps he has taken to remain above reproach in Washington as well as some of the ways he has been able to advocate for conservative principles in the Federal government. I am grateful for the opportunity PHC provided to meet a strong Christian role model like him."
Rep. Moran posted about PHC on his Facebook page: "This morning, I was honored to speak to Patrick Henry College students during their chapel service. Patrick Henry College seeks to educate students in God’s truth throughout the entire curriculum, and it was a privilege to share my testimony with these students about the intersection of faith and politics."
